Surrey says Newton park upgrades start this summer

Surrey says two popular Newton parks are getting major upgrades, with construction expected to begin this summer and amenities arriving over the next few years.

What Surrey announced

The City of Surrey says about $27.5 million in work is planned for Newton Athletic Park and Unwin Park. The projects include new sport fields, courts, walking-path lighting, washrooms, change rooms, a spray-park upgrade, and access improvements.

The city announced the update on July 22, 2026. It says the investment includes $16.5 million from Surrey and $11 million from the Government of Canada through the Build Communities Strong Fund.

What Newton Athletic Park is slated to get

Newton Athletic Park is already one of Surrey's major year-round sport sites. The city says the new work will add a turf field, a practice area, energy-efficient lighting along the walking track, and four new lighted tennis courts.

Surrey also says the upgrades support its Sport Tourism Strategy by adding facilities that can serve local clubs and attract tournaments. For athletes and families, the practical takeaway is that the work affects both everyday recreation and organized sport capacity.

What is planned for Unwin Park

Unwin Park is framed as the more community-hub part of the announcement. Surrey says the plan was guided by public feedback through the Unwin Park Plan.

The city lists these new or upgraded facilities:

  • Covered sport court: the first piece Surrey says will begin this summer.
  • Field house: planned with washrooms and change rooms.
  • Courts: pickleball, tennis, and basketball are included in the plan.
  • Park access: enhanced walking paths, added parking, new entrances, and other accessibility improvements.
  • Spray park: the existing spray park is slated for an upgrade.

Surrey's capital-projects page also lists Unwin Park covered multi-sport courts as planning underway, with an open-air building designed for multiple sports.

What residents should watch next

The useful detail is timing. Surrey says work begins this summer, starting with the covered sport court at Unwin Park, while many improvements will be added over the next few years.

Residents who use Newton Athletic Park or Unwin Park should watch Surrey's park-project updates before planning around a specific court, field, path, entrance, or washroom. The announcement confirms the scope and starting point, but it does not provide a complete amenity-by-amenity construction calendar.
