Delta Nature Reserve is now fully closed, viewpoint included, while the old boardwalk comes out

Metro Vancouver has closed the Delta Nature Reserve in Delta, including the viewpoint and its access trail, while it removes the boardwalk built over 30 years ago. The Delta Nature Reserve in Delta is closed, and this time the viewpoint is closed too. Metro Vancouver says work is underway to remove the boardwalk built over 30 years ago, and the reserve is closed until further notice, including the viewpoint and its access trail.

Metro Vancouver's closure map dated October 21, 2026 shades the reserve as "AREA CLOSED, Due to construction activities" and marks the viewpoint trail off the Service Road as "Viewpoint & trail closed." Removal is expected to take several months, and construction of the replacement boardwalk starts in 2027.

The change that matters is the viewpoint: the October 20 version of this notice still kept the viewpoint open as the only part of the reserve you could visit, so if a short stop there was your plan, there is now no public access at all and you should pick another walk until Metro Vancouver posts a reopening.

What to know

Reserve closure: Metro Vancouver's park page says the Delta Nature Reserve is closed due to work underway for the Boardwalk Replacement Project, and there is no public access to trails or viewpoints.

Timing: Removing the old boardwalk is expected to take several months. Construction of the replacement boardwalk starts in 2027. The alert headline says the area is closed until further notice.

Why: Metro Vancouver says the boardwalk is being replaced because of damage from flooding and falling trees, to create safer, more resilient pathways and a more accessible experience. The new boardwalk will also provide new seating areas and connect to the proposed extension of the Delta South Surrey Regional Greenway.

Service road near 72 Avenue: Due to flooding and washouts, the service road beside the reserve is closed just north of 72 Avenue. There is access to the service road from Nordel Way, but no through access to 72 Avenue, so be prepared to retrace your steps.

Delta South Surrey Regional Greenway: Some sections may be intermittently and unpredictably flooded after heavy rainfall.

What to do

  • Do not plan a visit to the Delta Nature Reserve trails or viewpoint. Stay out of the closed area and follow posted safety signs.
  • If you use the service road from Nordel Way, expect to turn around: it is closed just north of 72 Avenue.
  • On the Delta South Surrey Regional Greenway, watch for flooded sections after heavy rain and follow posted signs.
  • Check the Delta Nature Reserve page or the park alerts page for the reopening. Metro Vancouver's Central Area Office is at 604-520-6442.
