The City of New Westminster says construction is anticipated to begin on October 26 on Ninth Street to install speed humps, part of its Eighth, Ninth and Tenth Street Corridor active transportation project. Work hours are Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the corridor's anticipated construction dates are October 6, 2026 to March 2027.

The City of New Westminster roadworks page lists the start date, hours and impacts in an update dated October 20, 2026. The City's official corridor map marks the new speed humps on Ninth Street and the other changes planned between Columbia Street and London Street.

If you use Ninth Street as a weekday through route, this is a two-step change: the paving closure between Fourth Avenue and Fifth Avenue is listed to end October 23, and the speed hump work is set to start the following Monday, so plan for slower trips on Ninth Street into next week rather than a clear road once the paving wraps.

What to know

Where: Ninth Street, as part of the Eighth, Ninth and Tenth Street Corridor between Columbia Street and London Street. The City map shows the new speed humps along Ninth Street.

When: Construction is anticipated to begin on October 26, 2026. Anticipated construction dates for the corridor are October 6, 2026 to March 2027.

Hours: Monday to Friday, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Impacts: The City says to expect construction noise and dust, temporary traffic disruptions including single lane traffic and/or one way traffic, and restricted street parking. Its project page says a detailed construction letter regarding dates and traffic impacts was delivered to residents and businesses in the area the week of October 20.

What else is planned on the corridor: The City's project page lists a star diverter at Tenth Street and London Street that only allows right turns, a diagonal bicycle crossing at Eighth Avenue and Tenth Street, a new multi-use pathway on the east side of Tenth Street between Seventh Avenue and Eighth Avenue, a diagonal bicycle crossing at Royal Avenue and Eighth Street, a multi-use pathway on the west side of Eighth Street from Milton Street to Royal Avenue, and a two-way protected bike lane on the east side of Eighth Street between Royal Avenue and Columbia Street. The City says all parking and loading areas on the east side of Eighth Street between Royal Avenue and Columbia Street will be removed for that bike lane.

Paving this week: The City's Capital Pavement Program lists Ninth Street between Fourth Avenue and Fifth Avenue for milling, paving and grading from October 19 to 23, weather dependent. Ninth Street will be closed there, with access to properties maintained and street parking restricted during working hours.

What to do

  • From October 26, on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., allow extra time on Ninth Street and expect single-lane or one-way sections near the work.
  • If you park on Ninth Street, watch for parking restrictions in the work zone.
  • Follow posted signs through the work area, whether you are driving, cycling or walking.
  • For immediate construction and traffic concerns, the City lists David Williams, Project Manager, Crown Contracting Ltd., at 604-290-5222.
  • Check the City roadworks page for the latest dates, since the City says work is weather dependent and subject to change.

Also on the list: the City's London Street update, last updated October 20, 2026, says speed hump installation will begin along London Street the week of October 26.
