London Street in New Westminster is under weekday construction, Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., as the City builds its London Street bikeway. Work started October 6, 2026, at London Street and 23rd Street and will continue east toward Tenth Street, with anticipated construction dates of October 6, 2026 to March 2027.
The City of New Westminster roadworks entry, dated October 6, lists the dates, hours and impacts. The City's official London Street Route map shows the route from 23rd Street to Eighth Street, labelled as the proposed design.
The construction is the short-term hassle, but the bigger change for drivers comes after: once the diverters at Thirteenth Street and Tenth Street go in, motor vehicles will only be able to turn right there, so anyone who uses London Street as a straight-through shortcut should plan on that route ending.
What to know
Where: London Street from 23rd Street to Eighth Street. The City says work began at 23rd Street and is moving east toward Tenth Street.
When: Anticipated construction dates are October 6, 2026 to March 2027. The roadworks header lists the end as spring 2027, and the City says work is weather dependent.
Hours: Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Impacts: The City says to expect construction noise and dust, temporary traffic disruptions including single-lane traffic and/or one-way traffic, and restricted street parking. It says a detailed construction letter on dates and traffic impacts was sent in advance to residents and businesses in the area.
What is being built: Pullover pockets with small curb extensions, where vehicles and cyclists can pull over and yield to oncoming traffic (the City says only four parking spaces on each block are removed for these). Signs to enforce existing no stopping rules near intersection corners. Star diverters at Thirteenth Street and Tenth Street that only allow right turns. A diverter that makes the block between 20th Street and 19th Street one-way, westbound only, so eastbound traffic cannot enter London Street at 20th Street. Improved street lighting, paint and signage, an improved crossing at 23rd Street, and upgraded Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons for pedestrian crossings at 12th Street.
What to do
- On weekdays between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., allow extra time on London Street and expect single-lane or one-way sections near the active work area.
- If you park on London Street, watch for parking restrictions in the work zone.
- Follow posted signs through the work area, whether you are driving, cycling or walking.
- For immediate construction concerns, the City lists David Williams, Project Manager, Crown Contracting Ltd., at 604-290-5222.
- Check the City roadworks page for the latest traffic impacts.
Also nearby this week: the City lists Ninth Street between Fourth Avenue and Fifth Avenue for milling, paving and grading from October 19 to 23, weather dependent. Ninth Street will be closed there, with access to properties maintained and street parking restricted during working hours.
