How do you do a White Rock day trip from Vancouver? Take the Canada Line to Bridgeport, connect by bus toward White Rock Centre (commonly the 351), then continue downhill to Marine Drive near the pier, or drive and budget for paid waterfront parking. Walk the pier first, continue along the promenade toward East Beach and the namesake white rock, time a beach stop around low tide if you want more sand, then eat along Marine Drive before the return trip. Allow roughly a half day or more because the transit leg is longer than a Richmond outing. Confirm bus times, parking rates, and any pier notices before you leave.

Why White Rock works as a day trip
White Rock is a compact seaside strip on Semiahmoo Bay: a long wooden pier, a continuous promenade, sand that grows or shrinks with the tide, and a food strip along Marine Drive. It feels sunnier and more beach-town than a downtown waterfront walk, without needing a packed itinerary.
Set expectations. Transit from Vancouver is longer than Steveston. Waterfront parking is paid and busy on warm weekends. The reward is a calm pier-and-promenade day that rewards tide timing more than a checklist of attractions.
If you already did Steveston or Deep Cove, White Rock fills the South Surrey / Semiahmoo gap with a different shoreline feel.
How to get there
Canada Line + bus
The clean public-transit pattern is Canada Line south to Bridgeport Station, then a bus toward White Rock.
The main link is bus 351 (White Rock Centre / Bridgeport Station). It is a Frequent Transit Network-style corridor between Bridgeport and White Rock Centre. Sample schedules often show about 50 minutes from Bridgeport Bay 9 to White Rock Centre in ordinary conditions. Treat that as typical, not guaranteed.
Bus 354 (White Rock South / Bridgeport Station) also runs the Bridgeport corridor into the White Rock south end. If your goal is the pier and Marine Drive strip near White Rock Centre, the 351 into the Centre is usually the clearer first target. Confirm your stop on TransLink Trip Planner or the Transit app the morning you go.
From White Rock Centre, you still need the waterfront:
- Walk downhill toward Marine Drive and the pier (steep in places; leave buffer if you have mobility constraints or a stroller).
- Or take a short local hop: 362 (Seaside / White Rock Centre) runs along Marine Drive; 361 (Ocean Park / White Rock Centre) also serves Marine Drive stops. Local hops are often on the order of about 10 minutes when a bus lines up.
Door to pier from downtown Vancouver often lands in a 75 to 100+ minute window once you add Canada Line time, the Bridgeport wait, the long bus leg, and the final hop or walk. That is the honest trade-off versus a Richmond harbour day. Check live departures before you commit.
Driving and parking
Driving from Vancouver is often faster than transit when Highway 99 cooperates, but the real decision is paid waterfront parking, not the bridge.
According to the City of White Rock Public Pay Parking page (checked Sept. 16, 2026):
- Pay parking is in effect year-round at waterfront lots, parkades, and related spots.
- Waterfront pay hours: 10 a.m. to midnight. Observe posted signage.
- Summer season (March to October), seven days a week, all lot and on-street waterfront locations including parkades:
- 20 minutes: $1.75
- 40 minutes: $3.50
- 60 minutes: $5.00
- Daily rate for Montecito and West Beach parkades: $18.50
- Winter season (November to February):
- 20 minutes: $1.25
- 40 minutes: $2.00
- 60 minutes: $3.00
- Parkade daily rate: $9.00
- West Beach Parkade is open for public use 8:00 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week, unless otherwise posted. Gates lock automatically shortly after midnight.
- All parking east of Oxford Street is limited to 4 hours maximum, excluding the parkades.
- Marine Drive waterfront uses PayByPhone (pay-by-space). Dispensers take cash or credit.
Prefer transit on sunny Saturdays, or arrive early if you are driving. Circling Marine Drive at peak lunch is how a half day turns into a parking hunt.
Hour-by-hour half-day outline
Use this as a template, not a stopwatch.
10:30–11:15 a.m. Arrive at White Rock Centre (or a waterfront lot). Walk or hop a local bus downhill to Marine Drive near the pier.
11:15 a.m.–12:15 p.m. Walk the pier out and back. Pause at the breakwater end for the bay view. Keep an eye on wind and posted notices.
12:15–1:30 p.m. Continue along the promenade toward East Beach and the namesake white rock. Stretch your legs. Decide whether the sand is wide enough for a beach sit.
1:30–2:45 p.m. Lunch along Marine Drive. Pick a casual spot with a line you can live with. Confirm hours on the door or the venue page rather than assuming a kitchen is open.
2:45–4:00 p.m. Optional second beach loop at low tide, coffee for the return buffer, then back uphill to White Rock Centre for the 351 toward Bridgeport.
If rain shows up, shorten the beach sit, keep the pier walk if conditions are safe, and lean on Marine Drive indoor seating.
Pier, promenade, and the white rock
These are free outdoor landmarks. The City of White Rock Pier & Promenade page lists the pier at about 470 metres and the promenade at roughly 2.19 km end to end.
The pier is a wooden walkway into Semiahmoo Bay with a breakwater at the outer end. It is a major local landmark, rebuilt after severe storm damage in December 2018 and reopened in 2019. The promenade runs almost the length of the beach and connects East Beach and West Beach with frequent beach access points.
City rules worth knowing before you arrive:
- Dogs are not allowed on the pier at any time.
- Dogs on a two-metre leash are allowed on the promenade only between Oct. 1 and March 31 (see the City dogs page for details).
- Biking, inline skating, skateboarding, and smoking are prohibited on the pier and promenade.
Storm and safety note: In rough wind or high surf, the City sometimes posts caution or temporary closures for pier, promenade, or nearby trails. As of this draft check on Sept. 16, 2026, we did not find an active storm-closure notice for a same-day visit. Still check City news and alerts and the waterfront live cameras before you leave if the forecast looks wild. A May 2026 interim repair notice also reminded visitors that short walkway sections can close temporarily during work even when the pier stays open overall.
Beach and tide timing
White Rock’s beach character changes with the tide. Low tide expands the sand flats on Semiahmoo Bay. High tide shrinks the usable beach and pushes people onto the promenade.
Do not plan around a tide time you saw on a random blog. Use an official prediction table:

Check the day you travel. If you want a long sand walk, aim your beach block near a low tide window. If the tide is high, keep the pier and promenade as the main outdoor beat and save the beach sit for another visit.
Food along Marine Drive
Marine Drive is the casual waterfront strip: seafood, cafes, ice cream, and patio seating when the weather cooperates. Treat it as a corridor, not a ranked list.
We are not inventing “best of” scores or fabricating hours. Hours change seasonally, and sunny weekends create lines. The practical move is simple: walk a short stretch of Marine Drive, look at the line and the posted hours, and pick a spot that fits your timing. If the first patio is slammed, keep walking rather than waiting through your return-bus buffer.
Bring a payment method that works for busy waterfront counters, and confirm allergen or cash rules at the counter if that matters for your group.
Pairing ideas (other days, not the same afternoon)
White Rock already eats a half day once transit or parking is included. Do not force a same-day stack with Richmond or the North Shore.
