Can you do a Whytecliff Park day trip from Vancouver without a car? Yes. Use TransLink Trip Planner for your door-to-park trip. Ride #250 toward Horseshoe Bay (or #262 when Trip Planner suggests it) and alight near Marine Drive at Nelson Avenue. Walk west on Marine Drive through the residential stretch to Whytecliff Park (about 2 km, typically 20 to 30 minutes). Expect Howe Sound cliffs, a protected bay beach, picnic spots, and a saltwater marine protected area known for diving. Prefer the bus on sunny weekends when the lot fills. Pay parking, if you drive, is $5.08 per hour (including taxes) 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Confirm Trip Planner times and District park notices (including filming closures) before you leave.

Why Whytecliff works as a half day
Whytecliff packs a Howe Sound headland, a sheltered swimming bay, picnic lawn, and a famous dive shoreline into one West Vancouver destination park. You can ride a Marine Drive corridor bus to the Horseshoe Bay / Nelson Avenue area and finish on foot without gambling on a scarce stall.
That is the point of this planner: one park, clear transit plus an honest walk, parking and marine-park honesty.
Set expectations. The last stretch is on foot along Marine Drive. Build time for hills and traffic noise. Cliffs and shoreline rocks can be slippery. This guide does not invent dive-shop schedules or ferry connections beyond the park day. Confirm those directly if they matter.
If you liked the West Vancouver bus day of Ambleside or the forest headland of Lighthouse Park, this is the farther-west Howe Sound sibling. For a quieter inlet park later, pair with Belcarra or Capilano River.
How to get there without a car
Bus to Marine Drive at Nelson Avenue, then walk (preferred)
From Vancouver, common patterns are:
- #250 toward Horseshoe Bay along Marine Drive.
- #262 when Trip Planner routes you that way (TransitDB lists #250 and #262 at Marine Drive @ Nelson Avenue).
- #257 Horseshoe Bay Express can land you in the Horseshoe Bay area faster on some trips. Confirm Trip Planner. Express patterns differ from local #250 stops. Do not assume every Express trip stops exactly where you want.
Useful public TransitDB stops near the walk start:
- Westbound Marine Dr @ Nelson Ave (stop 60885) for the outbound alight toward the park walk
- Eastbound Marine Dr @ Nelson Ave (stop 54559) for the return toward Vancouver
- Nearby Nelson Avenue / Bay Street listings include Southbound Nelson Ave @ Bay St (stop 54557)
From the Nelson Avenue / Marine Drive roundabout area, walk west on Marine Drive through the residential stretch until you reach the Whytecliff Park entrance and lot. Plan about 2 km and 20 to 30 minutes on foot. Treat that as typical, not guaranteed. Wear shoes you can walk hills in.
Build buffer for Lions Gate and Marine Drive traffic on the bus run.
Return
Walk back east on Marine Drive to Eastbound Marine Dr @ Nelson Ave (stop 54559) or the stop Trip Planner names for your return trip. Confirm the headsign toward Vancouver / Park Royal / downtown. Do not invent a fixed downtown arrival minute.
Bike notes
Some riders combine a quieter West Vancouver ride with a park stop. Obey Marine Drive traffic and posted park rules. Do not invent a continuous off-street path from downtown to Whytecliff.
Driving and parking (if you skip transit)
Prefer the bus so the half day is not a parking hunt. District materials say public parking at Whytecliff is limited and fills quickly in good weather. Lots will be closed when full. Have an alternate plan and follow traffic control.
Destination Parks pay parking (District page checked Oct. 2, 2026):
- In effect year-round 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week
- Whytecliff rate $5.08 per hour including taxes (same band as Lighthouse, Whyte Lake / Nelson Canyon, Cypress Falls, Seaview Walk)
- Pay via hangTag, PayByPhone, or the physical pay station trial at Whytecliff (credit card insert; not tap)
- Veterans / Memorial Cross plates and valid accessible placards are exempt
- West Vancouver residents may apply for a free annual resident pass via Impark
There is no day-pass rate. Overnight parking is not permitted. Do not invent a free all-day stall for non-residents.
Hour-by-hour half-day outline
- Morning bus. Ride #250 (or Trip Planner's route) to Marine Drive at Nelson Avenue. Start the westbound Marine Drive walk to Whytecliff.
- Arrival and washrooms (15 minutes). Use the main washroom building in the northwest corner of the parking lot (7 a.m. to 9 p.m.). Portable toilets sit at the south end of the lot by the beach path. The lower washroom and changeroom are closed.
- Beach and picnic block (45-90 minutes). Walk down to the protected bay. Picnic tables and playground are on site. Confirm swim status on posted signs and the District park page before entering the water.
- Headland walks and views (45-75 minutes). Short trails reach Howe Sound viewpoints and rocky shoreline. Stay back from cliff edges. Rocks can be wet.
- Optional tennis or concession. Free public tennis courts are first-come. Concession hours are listed 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily on the District page. Confirm the operator if food is critical to your plan.
- Optional scuba (trained divers only). Whytecliff waters are a designated Saltwater Marine Protected Area. District copy notes beginner-to-experienced diving with rockfish, lingcod, crab, sculpin, anemones, starfish, harbour seals, and occasional wolf eel or giant octopus. A diver-access ramp for divers with disabilities is listed among amenities. Only dive if you are trained, insured as required by your practice, and the park notice allows diving that day.
- Return walk and bus. Walk back to Nelson Avenue / Marine Drive with buffer. Confirm Trip Planner for the eastbound bus.
Beach, diving, dog, and notice honesty
District of West Vancouver Whytecliff Park notes (checked Oct. 2, 2026):
- Popular for scuba diving in a designated Saltwater Marine Protected Area
- Swimming in the protected bay in hot weather
- Playground, picnic spots, tennis courts, outdoor shower, picnic shelter
- Filming notice on the park page: no swimming or scuba diving on Thursday, Oct. 1, and Monday, Oct. 5 through Thursday, Oct. 8, with film liaisons on site for public access. Re-check the live page the morning you go. Windows change.
Dogs: District Dogs in Parks lists Whytecliff Park (east of Marine Drive) among off-leash trail areas. Leash dogs elsewhere in the park, including beaches and playgrounds, unless a sign says otherwise. Scoop waste. Confirm the live District map before you bring a pet.
Marine protection: treat the shoreline and underwater life as protected. Do not collect animals or damage habitat. Follow DFO and park signs.
What not to confuse with this park
Horseshoe Bay village and BC Ferries are nearby but separate. A ferry ticket is not required for a Whytecliff park day.
Lighthouse Park is farther east on Marine Drive (Beacon Lane). Different stop, different trails. Use the Lighthouse Park day-trip guide when that headland is the goal.
Ambleside Park is the West Vancouver gateway waterfront nearer Park Royal, with different pay-parking rules (including a 90-minute free PayByPhone session). Do not mix Ambleside rates with Whytecliff's $5.08/hr Destination Parks rate.
