Why Ambleside works as a half day
Ambleside is West Vancouver's gateway waterfront park. You can ride a Marine Drive corridor bus from Vancouver, walk sand and grass with downtown views, and ride home without gambling on a scarce stall.
That is the point of this planner: one park, clear transit, parking honesty.
Set expectations. Sunny weekends fill the lots early. Lifeguard summer service is finished for 2026. The District lists a concession (the Boat Shed) and a seasonal sauna pop-up, but this guide does not quote operator hours. Confirm those directly if they matter to your plan.
If you liked the forest headland of Lighthouse Park by bus or the West Side beach corridor of Jericho + Kitsilano, this is the closer West Vancouver waterfront sibling on the same #250 family. For a longer harbour day later, pair with Deep Cove or Stanley Park.
How to get there without a car
Marine Drive corridor from Vancouver (preferred)
The District of West Vancouver Ambleside Park page lists these routes from Vancouver:

- #254 Park Royal / British Properties (change at Park Royal or walk about 5-10 minutes to the park)
From North Vancouver, the same page lists #255 (Park Royal / Dundarave) and #239 (Park Royal). From Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal, it lists #257 Vancouver and #250 Vancouver.
Use TransLink Trip Planner for the stop nearest Ambleside / 13th Street, then walk downhill to the water. The park is at the foot of 13th Street. Treat door-to-park times as typical, not guaranteed. Bridge traffic, Park Royal peaks, and weekend crowds change the run. Build a buffer.
Confirm before you leave
Use Trip Planner or the Transit app. Do not invent a fixed minute count from your couch. Ask for the stop name you need, then walk the last stretch.
Bike and Spirit Trail
Ambleside is on the Spirit Trail and other cycling routes. The District allows bikes, boards, and rollerblades on the Spirit Trail in the park. They are not permitted on the waterfront path. Follow posted signage. An e-bike share station is listed at the foot of 13th Street.
Driving and pay parking (if you skip transit)
Prefer the bus so the half day is not a parking hunt. The District says public parking at Ambleside is limited and fills quickly in good weather.
Pay parking is in effect year-round for Ambleside Park, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week, under the Destination Parks Pay Parking program (Impark). Vehicles with Veteran or Memorial Cross plates and vehicles with a valid accessible parking placard are exempt. West Vancouver residents may apply for a free annual resident pass (proof of local registration required).
90 minutes free, then $2.50 per hour
As of July 7, 2026, visitors can receive 90 minutes of free parking by starting a PayByPhone session and entering their licence plate (app, website, or call 604-909-7275). Each plate gets one free 90-minute session per day. If you do not start a PayByPhone session, regular rates apply.
For time beyond 90 minutes, the District lists $2.50 per hour (including taxes) through Dec. 31, 2026. Buy extra time with PayByPhone, hangTag, or a physical pay station. Ambleside has physical pay stations on a trial. Cards must be inserted. Contactless tap is not available at those machines per District FAQ.
Tennis courts / Rutledge Field lot cap
Parking in the lot adjacent to the tennis courts and Rutledge Field remains limited to three hours maximum, seven days a week, including for annual parking pass holders.

Hour-by-hour half-day outline
- Morning bus. Ride a District-listed Marine Drive route toward Ambleside / Park Royal. Alight for Ambleside and walk to the foot of 13th Street.
- Waterfront block (60-90 minutes). Walk the sand and waterfront path. Use Fieldhouse or concession washrooms. Note lifeguards are off until 2027.
- Park amenities block (45-75 minutes). Playground, picnic tables, duck pond, fitness circuit, tennis (first-come, 30-minute game limit per District note), skatepark, sports fields, or a short Spirit Trail stretch. Stay off the waterfront path if you are on wheels.
- Optional edge. Park Royal is a short walk or bus hop if you want shops later. Do not build the day around cafe hours you have not confirmed.
- Return bus. Walk back to your Marine Drive stop with buffer before evening plans. Pay-parking enforcement window runs to 10 p.m.
Swap blocks if Trip Planner drops you closer to Park Royal first. The park is still a short walk or one local hop.
What to expect at Ambleside
District-listed amenities include concession, parking, picnic tables, public washrooms with change rooms, playground, duck pond, sports fields, basketball court, skatepark, fitness circuit, tennis courts, two bocce courts (one sand, one turf), and a pollinator garden. Inclusive playground notes include a We-Go-Round merry-go-round with roll-on access. Tennis is first-come, first-served with a 30-minute game limit when others are waiting.
The Boat Shed concession sits on the waterfront between the playground and public washrooms. Check its site for hours. A Gatherwell public sauna pop-up is listed east of the washrooms/change rooms (started Dec. 20, 2025). Book and hours are operator-side. This guide does not invent ticket prices.
Ambleside Par 3 / pitch-and-putt washrooms follow golf hours. Confirm that page if golf is the goal.
Dogs, lifeguards, and rules
Dogs on a leash no greater than two metres are permitted on the paved footpaths in Ambleside Park. Use the District map on the Ambleside page and the broader Dogs in Parks guidance for off-leash areas elsewhere. Do not invent beach off-leash access here.
Lifeguards have completed summer service and return in 2027. Swim at your own judgment.
Algae blooms can affect Ambleside Pond appearance and water quality in warm, shallow conditions. That is a District-noted natural process. Keep kids and dogs out of questionable pond water.
Food and cafes
The District lists the Boat Shed concession as open daily on the waterfront. Operator hours change. This guide does not quote cafe or concession hours. Confirm the concession or any Ambleside / Dundarave cafe the morning you go. Pack water either way.
Weather, crowds, and honesty
Sunny weekends fill Ambleside lots early. If you want quieter sand and paths, go earlier on a shoulder day and arrive by bus.
Fall is strong for cooler waterfront walks and clearer downtown views across the water, but it is not a reason to ignore fade-to-dark timing. Plan to be at your return stop with bus buffer before you are tired and cold.
