Can you do a Capilano River Regional Park day trip from Vancouver without a car? Yes. Use TransLink Trip Planner for your door-to-park trip. Ride a Capilano Road bus (#232, #236, or peak #247) toward Grouse Mountain. Alight near Eldon Road for the hatchery side or continue toward Montroyal Boulevard / Clements Avenue for the Cleveland Dam park entrance. Walk canyon loops, hatchery viewing platforms, or dam viewpoints. Prefer the bus on sunny weekends when lots fill. Confirm Trip Planner times and posted park hours at the entrance before you leave.

Why Capilano River works as a half day
Capilano River packs canyon views, old-growth pockets, a free federal hatchery, and lake/dam overlooks into one Metro Vancouver regional park. You can ride a Capilano Road bus from downtown, Lonsdale Quay, or Phibbs Exchange and walk without gambling on a scarce stall.
That is the point of this planner: one park, clear transit, trail and river-safety honesty.
Set expectations. Trails follow steep canyon slopes. Footbridges and decks can be slippery. No swimming or wading. River levels can change rapidly without warning. This guide does not invent cafe hours on Capilano Road. Confirm those directly if they matter. Capilano Suspension Bridge Park is a separate paid tourist attraction next door. It is not required for this regional-park half day.
If you liked the North Shore forest of Lynn Canyon or the West Vancouver bus day of Lighthouse Park, this is the Capilano canyon sibling. For a quieter inlet park later, pair with Belcarra or Pacific Spirit.
How to get there without a car
Capilano Road buses (preferred)
From Vancouver, common patterns are:
- SeaBus to Lonsdale Quay, then #236 toward Grouse Mountain along Capilano Road.
- #232 Phibbs Exchange / Grouse Mountain along Capilano Road.
- Peak #247 Downtown / Grouse Mountain (confirm Trip Planner; not all-day).
TransitDB stop 54367 lists #232, #236, and #247 at Northbound Capilano Rd @ Eldon Rd, a useful alight for the hatchery / canyon side. TransitDB stop 54370 is Northbound Capilano Rd @ Montroyal Blvd, closer to the Cleveland Dam park entrance. Treat door-to-park times as typical, not guaranteed. Build a buffer for Lions Gate and Capilano Road traffic.
Return southbound
Use Trip Planner for the southbound stop across Capilano Road. TransitDB lists Southbound Capilano Rd @ Eldon Rd (stop 54302) and Southbound Capilano Rd @ Clements Ave (stop 58049, #232 / #236). Do not invent a fixed downtown arrival minute.
Bike notes
Cycling is only allowed on the East Service Road, Capilano Pacific Trail south of Rabbit Lane, and the path across Cleveland Dam (brochure). Cyclists yield to hikers. Most canyon hiking trails are not bike routes.
Driving and parking (if you skip transit)
Prefer the bus so the half day is not a parking hunt. From Highway 1, take exit #14 (Capilano Rd / Grouse Mtn) and drive north. Turn for the fish hatchery, or continue to the Cleveland Dam parking lot (brochure directions).
Sunny-day lots fill early. Park gates lock when the park is closed. Do not leave a car inside a gated lot past posted hours.
Hour-by-hour half-day outline
- Morning bus. Ride a Capilano Road bus north. Alight near Eldon Road for hatchery trails, or nearer Montroyal / Clements for Cleveland Dam.
- Hatchery and short loops (60-90 minutes). Capilano Salmon Hatchery is operated by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, open year-round, free admission (brochure). Walk Coho Loop (~1.1 km return) or Second Canyon Viewpoint (~0.6 km return). Stay on marked trails.
- Optional Cleveland Dam block (45-75 minutes). Walk to dam viewpoints over Capilano Lake and the Lions. Use accessible picnic and toilet facilities at the dam if needed.
- Optional longer walk. Capilano Pacific Trail from Cleveland Dam toward Moyne Drive is about 5 km one way with short climbs and rough sections. Turn around when you have used half your buffer.
- Return bus. Walk back to Capilano Road with buffer. Confirm southbound Trip Planner.
Swap hatchery and dam blocks if you alight closer to one entrance first.
Trail and dog-sign honesty
Metro Vancouver brochure trail figures (Jan. 2025):
| Trail | Distance | Typical return time | Terrain | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Coho Loop (from hatchery) | ~1.1 km return | ~30 min | Flat, a few short climbs and stairs | | Second Canyon Viewpoint (from hatchery) | ~0.6 km return | ~20 min | Flat, easy | | Capilano Pacific (Cleveland Dam to Moyne Drive) | ~5 km one way | ~2 hours | Short climbs, stairs, some rough sections |
Stay on marked trails. Off-trail use damages steep canyon slopes. Footbridges and viewing decks can be slippery.
Dogs must be leashed unless otherwise posted, and under control at all times. Scoop and dispose of waste. Obey any no-dog area signs on the map you carry.
No camping, liquor, fires, or cannabis in the park. Smoking is not permitted except in designated marked areas (tobacco and e-cigarettes only where posted; not cannabis).
River safety (read this)
Brochure rules are firm:
- No swimming or wading. Pools look calm but currents are strong and water is very cold.
- Rocks are slippery. Water levels can change rapidly without warning.
- Beware rapids, whirlpools, and eddies. Steep cliffs make rescue difficult.
- White-water paddling is not recommended. Anyone attempting it needs advanced Class IV skills and full river-safety understanding (brochure wording).
Carry water, wear shoes with grip, and turn around if trails feel beyond your group.
What not to confuse with this park
Capilano Suspension Bridge Park is a private paid attraction on Capilano Road. It shares a neighbourhood name. It is not Metro Vancouver Capilano River Regional Park. You do not need a Suspension Bridge ticket for the regional park, hatchery, or Cleveland Dam areas covered here.
Grouse Mountain is farther up Capilano Road / Nancy Greene Way. Same bus corridor, different destination and price model.
