Plan a Minnekhada Regional Park day trip in October. Park hours 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. until November 2, then 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oliver Road inside the park is closed to vehicles for bear activity, so drivers use the Quarry Road Entrance, where the small parking area north of the entrance is closed for road work. Lodge Trail is about 2 km return and Minnekhada Lodge opens most Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m.
Is Minnekhada a good fall day trip? Yes, if you want a short forest and marsh walk with a historic lodge at the middle of it. Metro Vancouver describes Minnekhada Regional Park as forest, marsh and rocky outcrops that provide habitat to a variety of wildlife, with views at High Knoll. For late October 2026 the key facts are these. The park is open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. until November 2, then 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. from November 3. Oliver Road inside the park is closed to vehicles for a seasonal bear activity closure, so drivers use the Quarry Road Entrance. The small parking area north of the Quarry Road Entrance is closed for road work. And the City of Coquitlam's Cedar Drive work means detours and delays on all routes to the park.

Why Minnekhada works in late October
The trails are short enough for a half day, and the marsh is the draw. Metro Vancouver says Lodge Trail is mostly flat with excellent wildlife viewing along the Lower Marsh, and the brochure promises bird song and frog chorus along the marsh and vistas of Pitt River from High Knoll.
The access alerts are the catch, and they point to one plan. Quarry Road work mostly runs Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and the Quarry Road Entrance is the only way to drive in while Oliver Road is closed to vehicles, so a Sunday visit is the easiest choice this month: it misses most of the weekday road work and can line up with a lodge open house from 1 to 4 p.m. The brochure lists 604-432-6352 for open house dates, so call ahead if the lodge is the reason you are going.
Getting there
Driving. Use the Quarry Road Entrance. Metro Vancouver says Oliver Road in the park is closed to vehicles during the seasonal bear closure, which the alert says runs May to October and lasts about four months. It was still posted when we checked on Oct. 20. The road remains open to pedestrians, cyclists, authorized vehicles and event traffic.
Construction on the way. The park page says the City of Coquitlam is working on a major project that includes sewer system improvements, environmental enhancements and transportation upgrades. Victoria Drive and Cedar Drive are primarily affected, but visitors should expect detours, delays and significant increases in construction traffic on all routes to the park, with work expected to be ongoing until 2027. For details, the page lists the Cedar Drive Project team at cedardrive@coquitlam.ca or 604-927-3515.
Parking. Road improvements are underway along Quarry Road, and the small parking area north of the Quarry Road Entrance is not available to the public. This guide does not invent parking rules or rates. Follow the signs and leave before the posted closing time.
Transit. The Metro Vancouver park page does not list a transit option, and this guide does not invent one.
Half-day outline
- Start at the Quarry Road Entrance. The park page says the pit toilet at Quarry Road is wheelchair accessible, though the path to it is narrow, and bike racks are at the entrance.
- Walk Lodge Trail. It is about 2 km return from the Quarry Road Entrance, mostly flat, with excellent wildlife viewing along the Lower Marsh.
- Stop at the lodge. There is a small picnic area near Minnekhada Lodge. On open house Sundays, explore the rooms and grounds from 1 to 4 p.m. The brochure mentions views of the Pitt River from the balcony.
- Add Fern Trail if you have time. It is 2.7 km return from the small picnic area near the lodge, rolling with some steep sections, with partial views of Pitt River and Addington Marsh from the Addington Lookout.
- Use the park map for High Knoll. Metro Vancouver points to the park map for all trails. Cliffs and rock bluffs are found throughout the park, so stay on signed trails and back from the edge, especially at High Knoll and Low Knoll.
Current alerts
Seasonal road closure for bear activity. Oliver Road in the park is closed to vehicles. Drive in via the Quarry Road Entrance. If you see a bear, give it space: stay at least 100 metres away and be prepared to retrace your route.
Detours and delays getting to the park. Coquitlam's Cedar Drive area work affects all routes to the park and is expected to continue until 2027.
Delays and reduced parking along Quarry Road. The small parking area north of the Quarry Road Entrance is closed to the public. Work will mostly occur Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., throughout September and October. The page lists the City of Coquitlam at 604-927-3000 for this project.
Dogs, wildlife and park rules
- Dogs must be leashed and under control at all times. To protect wildlife, dogs are not permitted in streams, creeks or wetlands, including Minnekhada Marsh. Dogs are not allowed in Minnekhada Lodge. Scoop the poop.
- The park provides habitat for bears, cougars and coyotes. Never approach or feed a bear, stay back 100 metres, keep dogs leashed and make noise as you go. If you meet a bear, do not run: face it, back away slowly and make sure it has a clear exit.
- No cycling on park trails. Horseback riding is prohibited in the park but permitted on the adjacent Pitt River dykes.
- The brochure says vegetation removal, including fern fiddleheads and mushrooms, is prohibited. Look, do not pick.
- No camping, fires or cannabis. Barbecues and gas stoves are only allowed in areas with picnic tables.
- Minnekhada Farm, added to the park in 1995, is closed to the public. Some farm buildings are occupied, so respect tenants' privacy.
Accessibility
Metro Vancouver says the first floor of Minnekhada Lodge is wheelchair accessible, although the lodge washrooms are not. The picnic area near the lodge has no accessible tables and its pit toilet is not wheelchair accessible. Lodge Trail is loose gravel with one steep slope (18% for 12 m) plus additional steep slopes of 12%.
