Iona Beach Regional Park Day Trip: Jetty Walk, Fall Birding and 7 p.m. Gates (Jetty Viewing Structure Closed)

Plan an Iona Beach Regional Park day trip in October. Park hours 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. until November 2, then 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Iona Jetty is 4 km each way with wind shelters at 1.3 km and 2.5 km, the viewing structure at the end is closed after storm damage, there is no public transit, and dogs are kept off the ponds and foreshore.

Iona Beach Regional Park Day Trip: Jetty Walk, Fall Birding and 7 p.m. Gates (Jetty Viewing Structure Closed)

Is Iona Beach a good fall day trip? Yes, if you want a long, flat walk with big water views and birds. Metro Vancouver describes Iona Beach Regional Park as the place where the Fraser River meets the ocean, where you can watch herons, hawks and eagles or take in views of sea, sky and mountains. For late October 2026 the key facts are these. The park is open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. until November 2, then 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. from November 3. The Iona Jetty is 4 km long, so walking to the end and back is 8 km. The viewing structure at the end of the jetty is closed because of winter storm damage. There is no public transit to the park. And if the water near the Inner Jetty looks black or oily, Metro Vancouver says that is sea lettuce, a seaweed, breaking down naturally.

Why Iona works in late October

Metro Vancouver's brochure says more than 300 species of birds stop at Iona Beach to rest and feed during spring and fall migration, some after flying thousands of kilometres. That is the reason to bring binoculars now, and the reason the park asks for dogs to stay leashed in most areas: birds cannot afford to waste energy fleeing.

The hours are the other reason to go soon. With no transit and gates that lock at closing, the 7 p.m. close that lasts until November 2 is the real limit on an after-work walk, and it drops to 6 p.m. on November 3. If the full 8 km jetty walk is the plan, start at least three hours before closing so the brochure's 2.5 hour estimate has room for wind and stops.

Getting there

Driving or cycling. The park page links a Google map rather than spelling out a route, and this guide does the same. Bike racks are at the Iona Jetty and near the washroom building.

Transit. Metro Vancouver states plainly that no public transit is available to or from the park. Do not plan on a bus.

Parking. This guide does not invent parking rules or rates. Follow the signs at the lot, and leave before the posted closing time.

Half-day outline

  1. Start at the main beach area. The washroom building with flush toilets is here, and picnic tables sit at the beach area, on the west side of the South Marsh and near the Iona Jetty entrance.
  2. Loop the ponds. Pathways circle the north and south ponds, which Metro Vancouver calls great places for birdwatching. Dogs are not allowed in the pond areas on the park's east side.
  3. Walk the Iona Jetty as far as you like. The top trail is for walkers and leashed dogs. The lower trail is for walkers, cyclists and dogs on or off leash. Use the wind shelters at 1.3 km and 2.5 km, and the pit toilet at the 2 km mark. The brochure warns it can be very windy.
  4. Turn around before the end if time is short. The viewing structure at the far end is closed, so there is no platform to reach this fall.
  5. Finish on the beach. The beach runs 3.4 km from the Iona Jetty to the North Jetty. Walk as much as you want, and keep an eye on the tide.

Trails at a glance

| Trail | Return distance | Time to return | Notes from the brochure | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Iona Jetty | 8.0 km | 2.5 hours | Flat, exposed, 360 degree views. Can be very windy. | | North Arm Jetty | 4.8 km | 2 hours | Sandy. Walking is allowed only on the beach below the high tide line, with no public access to the industrial area. | | Bridle Path | 1.0 km | 10 minutes | Flat, rough. Walkers and horses share it. |

Cycling. The brochure says bikes go on the service road parallel to the Iona Jetty pipes, not on the walking path on top of the pipes.

Current alerts

Jetty viewing structure closed. Metro Vancouver says the viewing structure at the end of the Iona Jetty is closed due to damage from winter storms. Stay off it.

Seaweed sheen at the Inner Jetty. The park page says visitors may see black mud and a sheen on the water in the Inner Jetty area. In summer and fall, sea lettuce builds up there and decomposes naturally, which can turn the mud black and make the water look like an oil slick.

Dogs, wildlife and park rules

  • Dogs are not allowed at the ponds and surrounding areas on the east side, or on the foreshore between the Iona Jetty and the North Jetty, because both are high value wildlife habitat.
  • The lower roadway on the Iona Jetty is leash optional, but dogs must still be under control. All other areas are leash required. Scoop the poop.
  • Coyotes live in the park. Do not approach or feed wildlife, and do not leave garbage.
  • Kiteboarding is not allowed. Do not remove vegetation or driftwood.
  • Beach activities are allowed between the jetties with no supervision. The brochure says to be alert to rapid tide changes and to check Vancouver Coastal Health's beach water quality report for specifics.

Accessibility

Metro Vancouver lists the washroom building beside the parking area, the table beside the South Marsh, the boardwalk and observation platform on the west side of the South Marsh, and the cycle path on the Iona Jetty as wheelchair accessible. The trail is almost flat, but the gravel is fairly loose and may be hard going with narrow tires.
