Trout Lake Day Trip by Transit (John Hendry Park)

Plan a Trout Lake / John Hendry Park day trip from Vancouver by SkyTrain or the Victoria Drive bus, walk the lake loop and north off-leash area, and check City of Vancouver beach rules and water-quality notes before you go.

Trout Lake Day Trip by Transit (John Hendry Park)

Can you do a Trout Lake day trip from Vancouver without a car? Yes. Use TransLink Trip Planner for your door-to-park trip. Ride SkyTrain to Commercial-Broadway Station (Expo or Millennium Line) and walk south on Victoria Drive toward East 19th Avenue, or ride Expo Line to Nanaimo Station and walk west. Bus #20 (Victoria) also serves Victoria Drive beside the park. Walk the lake paths, picnic areas, and the north off-leash area. Prefer transit when community-centre and park stalls are paid or full. Confirm Trip Planner times and posted beach and park signs before you leave.

Why Trout Lake works as a half day

Trout Lake is East Vancouver's freshwater lake park: paths, picnic tables, sports fields, a community centre, and a large dog off-leash area at the north end. You can ride SkyTrain or the Victoria Drive bus and walk without gambling on a scarce stall.

That is the point of this planner: one park, clear transit, beach and water-quality honesty.

Set expectations. Do not plan on swimming. The City of Vancouver Trout Lake Beach page states there are no lifeguards on site and swimming is not permitted. A baseline water-quality study under the John Hendry Park Renewal Plan is underway until the end of 2027. Potable-water top-ups into the lake have been discontinued to support that study, which may lower lake levels in dry months. Confirm live signs the morning you go.

If you liked the transit-first lake day of Belcarra, this is the in-city freshwater sibling. For a North Shore canyon contrast later, pair with Capilano River or Pacific Spirit.

How to get there without a car

SkyTrain, then walk (preferred)

Commercial-Broadway Station (Expo and Millennium Lines) is the usual door. Exit toward Victoria Drive / Commercial Drive and walk south on Victoria Drive toward East 19th Avenue and the park. Walking time is typically about 10 to 15 minutes from the station area. Treat that as typical, not guaranteed.

Nanaimo Station (Expo Line) is another Expo option. Walk west toward the park. Build buffer for lights and hills.

Use TransLink Trip Planner for the exact door-to-park trip and return.

Bus #20 Victoria

TransitDB lists route 20 as Victoria. Useful park-area stops from public TransitDB listings:

  • Northbound Victoria Dr @ E 22 Ave (stop 51215)
  • Southbound Victoria Dr @ E 22 Ave (stop 50970)
  • Nearby corridor stops include Northbound Victoria Diversion @ Victoria Dr (stop 51216) and Southbound Victoria Diversion @ Commercial St (stop 50967)

Confirm Trip Planner headsign and stop before you leave. Night bus N20 also appears on some Victoria Drive stop pages. Do not invent fixed downtown arrival minutes.

Bike notes

Cycle to the park on signed street routes, then walk lake paths if bikes are restricted on a segment. Obey posted park signs. Do not invent an off-street protected path the whole way.

Driving and parking (if you skip transit)

Prefer SkyTrain or the bus so the half day is not a parking hunt. City of Vancouver community-centre pages note a paid parking pilot beginning mid-February 2026 at Hillcrest, Kerrisdale, and Trout Lake community centres and adjacent park spaces, with free parking for community-centre users under posted rules.

Sunny weekend stalls near the beach and fields fill. Read the meter and sign text on the stall you use. Do not leave valuables visible.

Hour-by-hour half-day outline

  1. Arrive by SkyTrain or #20. Alight at Commercial-Broadway or Nanaimo, or on Victoria Drive near East 22nd / the park frontage. Walk to the south beach corridor at Victoria Drive and East 19th Avenue.
  2. South shore block (45-75 minutes). Picnic tables, washrooms, play fields, and lake views. Stay out of the water. No swimming. No unauthorized boats or fishing.
  3. Lake loop or north end (45-90 minutes). Walk signed paths toward the north end for the dog off-leash area if that is your group. Keep dogs under control and scoop waste. Yield to other path users.
  4. Optional Saturday market (60-90 minutes). Vancouver Farmers Markets lists Trout Lake Saturdays 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., April 4 to October 31, 2026, at Lakewood Drive and East 13th Avenue. Confirm the live market calendar. Bring a tote. Do not invent vendor lists.
  5. Optional community centre. Trout Lake Community Centre is at 3360 Victoria Drive (City page). Check facility schedules directly if you want a drop-in program. This guide does not invent class times.
  6. Return transit. Walk back to Victoria Drive or to Commercial-Broadway / Nanaimo with buffer. Confirm Trip Planner.

Swap market and lake blocks if you arrive mid-morning on a Saturday.

Beach, dog, and water-quality honesty

City of Vancouver Trout Lake Beach notes (checked Oct. 1, 2026):

  • No lifeguards on site. Swimming not permitted.
  • Not permitted: fishing, or boats / watercraft on the lake, without authorization.
  • Features listed: play fields, concession, public washrooms, picnic area, barbeques permitted, dog off-leash area (north end of lake).
  • A baseline water-quality study is underway until the end of 2027 as part of the John Hendry Park Renewal Plan. Fresh potable water additions into the lake have been discontinued to support the study. Lake levels may drop in dry months.

Read the signs at the beach the morning you go. Rules can change with health or operations notices.

Dogs: use the signed north off-leash area. Elsewhere, expect leash rules unless a sign says otherwise. Scoop and dispose of waste. Keep dogs out of restricted beach or sports zones.

What not to confuse with this park

Trout Lake Community Centre programs (arena, fitness, classes) are facility bookings with their own schedules and fees. A park day trip does not require a membership.

Other Metro Vancouver "trout" or lake days (for example Sasamat Lake at Belcarra) are different parks with different transit and swimming rules. Do not mix their beach status with John Hendry Park.
