Take TransLink bus #50 False Creek to Anderson Street and West 2nd Avenue, then walk north under the Granville Bridge onto the Island. Or hop an Aquabus or False Creek Ferry from Hornby, Yaletown, or the Aquatic Centre. Spend the half day at the Public Market (daily 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.), Net Loft, and the seawall edge. Why Granville Island works as a half day
The Island sits under the south end of the Granville Bridge, a short bus hop or mini-ferry from downtown. Once you are on site you have the Public Market, Net Loft shops, Kids Market, artisan studios, and False Creek views without a ferry booking to Bowen or a long North Shore transfer.
That is the point of this planner: land near the market, walk a compact loop, and get home on bus or mini-ferry without gambling on a scarce stall.
Set expectations. Sunny weekends crowd Anderson Street and the market aisles. Pay parking applies if you drive, and weekend midday summer rates are the expensive window. Individual shops can close earlier than the posted market envelope, so confirm merchant hours the morning you go.
If you liked the harbour loop of Steveston or the inlet walk of Port Moody, Granville Island is the downtown-adjacent sibling that stays on False Creek.
How to get there without a car
Bus #50 False Creek
Granville Island’s Directions and Parking page says the #50 makes its regular stops at the Island. The stop is at Anderson Street and West 2nd Avenue. You get off on the southeast side of West 2nd, then walk north toward the large Granville Island sign and the Kids Market along Anderson.
Treat Trip Planner times as typical. Construction or bridge traffic can slow the run. Build a buffer if you are aiming for market opening at 9 a.m.
Granville and 5th interchange walk
Many urban and suburban routes stop at Granville and 5th Avenue at the south end of the Granville Bridge. From there, Granville Island materials put the walk at about 5 to 10 minutes northward under the bridge to the Island entrance. Useful if your home route does not connect cleanly to the #50.
Aquabus and False Creek Ferry
Two privately run mini-ferry fleets cross False Creek:
- Aquabus docks include Hornby Street, Granville Island (between the Public Market and the Arts Club), Stamp’s Landing, Yaletown (Davie), and Science World.
- False Creek Ferries also serve the Aquatic Centre (under Burrard Bridge), Maritime Museum, Stamp’s Landing, Science World, and a Granville Island dock near Bridges Restaurant.
Granville Island’s public materials describe continuous summer service from about 7 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. and winter service to about 8:30 p.m. Confirm last boats and current adult fares on theaquabus.com and granvilleislandferries.bc.ca the morning you go. Do not invent a fare from memory.
Bike and seawall
The False Creek Seawall passes the Island. Bike racks are listed across the site. Mobi stations are noted near Old Bridge and Cartwright, and at Anderson and 2nd. Aquabus’s Cyquabus carries bikes for an extra charge listed by Granville Island as 50 cents per bike from the Hornby dock. Use a sturdy lock.
Public Market and what to do in three hours
- Arrive near 9 a.m. for Public Market opening if you want shorter lines at bakeries and produce stalls. Granville Island notes construction may be visible but says businesses remain open as usual.
- Walk the market first, then Net Loft (listed 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) for boutiques and design shops.
- Kids Market is listed daily 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. if you have children with you.
- Loop the water edge for False Creek views and optional mini-ferry hop to Yaletown or Hornby for the return.
- Leave before the evening parking/ferry crush if you drove, or ride the #50 / mini-ferry back downtown.
False Creek Community Centre hours differ (weekdays into the evening; weekends shorter). Treat that as a separate facility, not the market day.
Dogs must be leashed on the Island and are not permitted inside the Public Market, per Granville Island rules.
Parking reality if you still drive
CMHC Granville Island is blunt: parking is limited, and leaving the car is preferred.

You can buy 15 minutes, 30 minutes, or 1-hour increments at pay stations or via PayByPhone / hangTag with lot code 1670. Purchasing until 10 p.m. is valid until 9 a.m. the next day. Overnight parking is only permitted in the multi-level parkade on Old Bridge Street, with license-plate registration (reception Mon–Fri 604-666-6655; weekends security 604-315-3003).
EV note: six Level II stations are listed on the main level of the Old Bridge Street indoor lot, with a $2/hour charging fee on top of regular parking. Vehicles parked more than three hours or parked without charging can receive a violation.
Street layout on the Island is one-way once you turn onto Cartwright. Watch for pedestrians and children.
Half-day outlines
Transit market morning (about 3 hours)
#50 or mini-ferry in → Public Market → Net Loft → coffee or takeaway → #50 or mini-ferry out.
Downtown combo (about 4 hours)
Aquabus from Hornby → market and water edge → optional Kids Market → return via Yaletown dock and walk Seawall or SkyTrain.
Drive only if you must (weekday)
Arrive before 11 a.m. to catch the $1 early window, or after 6 p.m. for the cheap evening rate. Avoid Saturday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. if you can ($6/hour summer).
