Central Park Burnaby Day Trip by SkyTrain: Perimeter Trail, Trail of Hope and Fall Park Hours

Plan a Central Park Burnaby day trip in October. Dawn-to-dusk hours, 213-acre urban forest, 3.5 km Perimeter Trail, Trail of Hope and 12 fitness stations, Patterson SkyTrain access, parking lot alert through Oct. 23, outdoor pool closed for the season, and linked Deer Lake and Burnaby Lake guides.

Central Park Burnaby Day Trip by SkyTrain: Perimeter Trail, Trail of Hope and Fall Park Hours

Is Central Park Burnaby a good fall day trip? Yes, if you want an urban forest walk with a soft track underfoot and a SkyTrain station at the edge of the park. The City of Burnaby calls Central Park a naturally urban oasis in the heart of Metrotown: Douglas fir, cedar, and vine maple across 86 hectares (213 acres), plus ponds, gardens, tennis courts, playgrounds, and Swangard Stadium. For mid-October 2026 the key facts are simple. The park is open dawn to dusk year-round. The Perimeter Trail is 3.5 km of rubberized walking and running surface with lighting. The Trail of Hope is 2.5 km through the interior forest and carries the outdoor fitness circuit. The outdoor pool is closed for the season. A parking lot at Patterson Ave and Kingsway is closed Oct. 5 to 23 for maintenance. By transit, Patterson Station on the Expo Line sits beside the park. Use TransLink Trip Planner for schedules. Colour timing changes with the weather, so treat any peak-date claim online as a guess.

Why Central Park works in mid-October

Burnaby Lake and Deer Lake are the quieter water and marsh walks. Central Park is the big urban forest next to Metrotown: path loops you can size in an hour or stretch into a half day, plus playgrounds and picnic tables if you are bringing kids.

The Perimeter Trail is the practical reason to come now. Burnaby describes it as one of the longest continuous rubberized tracks for walking and running in Metro Vancouver. The surface is designed to be gentler on tree roots and to let water pass through. Trees along the route give some shade by day, and lighting is meant to add comfort after dark. That matters when you are walking toward dusk, which is when the park closes.

Fall colour is secondary and variable. The park page leads with Douglas fir, cedar, and vine maple, not a peak colour calendar. If the vine maples are turning, enjoy them. If they are not, the rubberized loop and the forest interior still work.

If you already walked Burnaby Lake Regional Park or Deer Lake Park this fall, keep Central Park as its own day. It is denser, more programmed, and closer to SkyTrain.

How to get there (transit first)

The City of Burnaby says Central Park has easy access from Patterson SkyTrain station. The park page adds that Patterson Station has a west access on the park side of Patterson Avenue at Central Boulevard. TransLink lists Patterson Station on its SkyTrain station pages and publishes an accessible-entrance map for the station.

This guide does not invent walk times, headways, or which train you should take. Open TransLink Trip Planner, set your destination to Central Park or 3883 Imperial St, Burnaby, and check the day you go. Expo Line service to Patterson is the usual SkyTrain answer, but Trip Planner is the source of truth for your start point and time.

Arriving by bike? The Perimeter Trail page notes the trail connects to the BC Parkway. Use Burnaby's bike map and posted park signs for where cycling is allowed. This guide does not invent bike rules beyond what Burnaby posts for the Perimeter Trail connection.

Driving and parking honesty

Burnaby lists 4 main parking lots and 5 secondary lots, plus a total of 25 accessible parking stalls across named lots. Main lots include:

  • Boundary Rd / Central Park pool lot (northbound on Boundary between 47th and 46th Ave)
  • Swangard large lot (off Kingsway, just east of Boundary Rd)
  • Imperial / Pitch and Putt lot (off Imperial, east of Boundary Rd)
  • Patterson and Kingsway lot (Patterson Ave, south of Kingsway)

Secondary lots include the Swangard small lot, Patterson south tennis court lot (closest to the Trail of Hope / fitness circuit), lawn bowling lot, north picnic / Variety Park lot, and Patterson north tennis court lot. EV charging stalls are available per the park page.

Current closure: from Oct. 5 to 23, the Patterson Ave and Kingsway parking lot is closed for maintenance, weather permitting. From Oct. 13 to 16, the public washroom near that lot is also closed, with temporary washrooms nearby. On Oct. 15 that washroom closure is still active. Use another lot.

Free parking wording: Burnaby's Swangard Stadium page says free parking is available at the Boundary Rd and 47th Avenue lot and the east lot from Kingsway. The outdoor pool page says free parking on the south side of the pool building. This guide does not invent rates for every other lot. Trust the signs at the lot you use, and do not park in residential areas or where parking is not permitted (park page rule).

Half-day outline

  1. Arrive at Patterson Station and enter on the park side. Use the west access at Patterson Avenue and Central Boulevard. Orient yourself with the posted park map or Burnaby's downloadable Central Park Map PDF.
  2. Walk a Perimeter Trail segment or the full 3.5 km loop. The rubberized track outlines the park. Lighting is listed for after-dark comfort, but still plan to leave by dusk because that is when the park closes.
  3. Cut into the Trail of Hope if you want forest and fitness stations. The outdoor fitness circuit sits along the 2.5 km Trail of Hope, with equipment for cardiovascular, balance, strength, and flexibility work. Burnaby's pocket map shows 12 stations. The Patterson south tennis court lot is the parking lot Burnaby flags as closest to this trail.
  4. Stop at Variety Park playground or a picnic table if you have kids. Variety Park is near Swangard Stadium in the northwest corner. Another playground sits off Boundary Rd near the outdoor pool. Picnic tables are mostly first come, first served; picnic areas 1, 2, and the North Upper Pond can be booked. Propane, charcoal, and open-flame barbeques are allowed at this park. If garbage cans are full, take your garbage with you.
  5. Leave by dusk. Dawn-to-dusk is the posted year-round rule.

Do not plan a swim today. The outdoor pool is closed for the season.

Trails and what to do

Perimeter Trail. Completed in sections, with the third section along Imperial St finished in spring 2021 after earlier sections on Boundary Rd and Patterson Ave. Burnaby markets it as one of the longest continuous rubberized tracks in Metro Vancouver and notes it connects to the BC Parkway. Community groups can host fundraising walks and runs on both the Perimeter Trail and the Trail of Hope.

Trail of Hope and fitness circuit. Interior forest route at 2.5 km with 12 outdoor fitness stations. Download Burnaby's fitness pocket map if you want the station layout before you go.

Pitch and putt. The park page lists a pitch and putt golf course among the park features, aimed at players ages 8 and up. Confirm seasonal hours and fees on Burnaby's golf pages before you go. This guide does not invent tee times or prices. The linked golfburnaby Central Park URL returned a 404 when checked on Oct. 15, so verify the current booking page from Burnaby's park links.

Tennis and outdoor games. Twelve outdoor tennis courts off Patterson Ave, south of Beresford St. Volleyball between the Swangard parking lot and picnic area. Lawn bowling in the northeast area off Kingsway west of Patterson Ave. Sixteen horseshoe pitches east of the outdoor pool.

Swangard Stadium. Multi-purpose stadium in the northwest corner. The stadium page notes a 400-metre track you may use when the stadium is open to the public, and it asks you to check upcoming bookings first. Monday to Friday office-style hours listed on that page are for stadium operations, not park dawn-to-dusk hours. Only trained service dogs are allowed at the stadium.

Seasonal honesty: pool, spray park, and fall

Outdoor pool: Burnaby's Central Park Outdoor Pool page states the pool is currently closed for the season and asks visitors to check back next spring for the 2027 opening date. It is an 8-lane, 50-metre heated pool (27-30°C, weather dependent) with a 1-metre diving board when open. Everyone entering pays admission when it operates. Do not show up expecting a mid-October swim.

Spray park: Burnaby's Water and Play Features page says spray parks, wading pools, and playground services are closed for the season, with thanks for a great summer and a note to check back next summer for 2027 schedules. Central Park's spray park sits in Variety Park playground.

Colour timing: Variable. No official peak-colour date is posted on the park pages checked today.

Accessibility

Burnaby lists these accessibility notes for Central Park:

  • Perimeter Trail has a smooth, wide surface, ideal for mobility aids such as wheelchairs.
  • Accessible washrooms throughout the park.
  • Variety Park playground upgraded for kids of all ages and abilities.
  • Swangard Stadium has a wheelchair ramp to spectator seating and a viewing area for people who use mobility aids.
  • Outdoor pool (when open) has a dedicated accessible change room with shower and a portable lift. Pool parking lists designated stalls off Boundary near the pool.
  • Accessible stall counts by lot are posted on the park page (25 total across named lots).

Confirm current washroom status during the Oct. 13-16 temporary closure near the Patterson Ave lot.

Dogs and park rules

From the Central Park page:

  • Keep dogs leashed and pick up after them immediately.
  • Park in designated areas only, not residential streets or no-parking zones.
  • Smoking has been banned in all City parks and multi-use paths since Jan. 1, 2022.
  • Most picnic tables are first come, first served.
  • Propane barbeques and charcoal and open-flame barbeques are allowed at this park.

This guide does not invent off-leash rules for Central Park itself. Burnaby links a separate dog off-leash areas page if you need a run. Swangard Stadium allows only trained service dogs.
